Cake Smash | Everything You Need to Know
/Most mommies would love to find a super unique way to introduce their babies to cake, make it exciting, make it fun and something that can go back in time, remembered and treasured for life! Totally all in with the idea, but read below before you plan a cake smash for your little one!
Most paediatricians in India do not recommend a high salt and sugary diet for babies under one, so you would see them having bland eggs (I know that look, but there kidneys are not fully formed yet), dal with super less salt or lots of yoghurt and then one day mommy comes in and says here’s your cake gobble it all up polish the heck out of it!
Now turn this around from your child’s perspective, you see what I mean? It’s not easy mommy, it’s too messy, I don’t know this taste, its probably too big to get into my little hands?!
Read below for my quick tips!
(1) Dont schedule the cake smash before your child turns a year old. Super important because there is a huge difference between a 10 month old and a 12 month old! Most times before one they do not bother about the cake, but sometimes they do. So you don’t want to plan it all and risk it! So much depends on the nature of your child and their levels of inquisitiveness!
(2) Practice Practice! Before the scheduled cake smash session, I always advise parents to let them play with mud, yoghurt, things that can get messy and make them love their mess. Yes isn’t a cake smash about all this sweet mess? Probably give them a taste of the cake, a small piece not the full cake of course! I have had clients tell me, oh the practice session was perfect with the full cake but clearly no interest today! So don’t give them a full practice cake!
(3) Don’t be upset! Even if your baby has not smashed the cake or probably not even touched it. You have a ton of other options, take photos in the setup, distract them and help them just like you always do. Don’t blame them or yourself for all this, its a joyous occasion, there’s already a tonne that has happened in one year of parenthood so hold on and let this be!
Go with the flow and hopefully this will turn out to be awesome and you will have beautiful memories to treasure, but please please have an open mind, be flexible at the end of the day, it’s your little heart out there trying to experiment with new things!
